Lake Okeechobee Monitoring Project
Status: Inactive
Equipment: In-Situ Aqua Troll
Lake Okeechobee is Florida’s largest lake, and is used by many industries, from municipalities and industry to personal uses such as recreation and as a habitat for wildlife. It is becoming increasing affected by leaching, which affects personal uses such as fishing and safety in its waters. Lately, Lake Okeechobee has seen it discharge toxic algae that eventually brings way to red tide, which is a major issue in Florida and an extreme detriment to human and marine health.

MOTUS Tower
Status: Active
Location: Watertown, Connecticut
Equipment: π
In collaboration with the MOTUS network, a robust telemetry tracking system was implemented using Raspberry Pis, FunCube dongles, software-defined radios (SDRs), and UHF antennas. These components were carefully integrated to extend the detection range and precision of wildlife monitoring across the region.
A mast equipped with eight strategically placed antennas was deployed in Watertown, Connecticut, enabling over 15km of detection per direction of wide-angle signal capture and facilitating high-resolution telemetry data collection. This setup provides real-time tracking of tagged wildlife species, enriching ecological studies and migration analysis through the MOTUS network’s shared infrastructure.

Wildlife Monitoring Station
Status: Active
Location: Watertown, Connecticut
Equipment: Axis/Cisco
A solar-powered wildlife tracking station was established in rural Connecticut to support long-term ecological observation. The station is equipped with high-resolution Axis cameras and telemetry systems that log passing wildlife with minimal environmental disruption. Cellular technology ensures reliable remote connectivity, enabling real-time data transmission from this off-grid location to research teams.

MOTUS Tower
Status: Inactive
Location: Iquitos, Peru
Equipment: π
A MOTUS wildlife tracking tower is slated for installation at the base of a remote lodge nestled along the rivers of the Amazon. Strategically positioned to extend above the rainforest canopy, this tower will optimize line-of-sight telemetry reception and maximize tag detection across the dense jungle landscape. The elevated placement ensures uninterrupted communication with tagged species in flight or migration, supporting biodiversity monitoring efforts in one of the world’s richest ecosystems.
